Indigenous Protestors at the Black Hills
Indigenous protestors gather at the sacred Black Hills, now the site of Mount Rushmore, where Trump appeared for a controversial July 4 ceremony. The protestors shut down the road leading to the event grounds for four hours and were pepper sprayed by the police and National Guard (as were we and other journalists).
A multigenerational gathering, led by many young women and including different tribes, peacefully held the line. They were supported by some Black Lives Matter protestors. Trump supporters yelled degrading comments, spit in the face of young woman and told the Lakota to « get over it » and « go home; back to where you came from ».
